Rivermuse (core) is an open source event management platform that has been gathering a lot of attention primarily since it has been founded by the original founders of Micromuse and promises an open source alternative to Netcool.

We've just released in the RapidOSS plugin for Rivermuse. This first version of the plugin provides seamless bi-directional integration between RapidOSS and Rivermuse, bringing alerts from Rivermuse into RapidOSS and forwarding user actions from RapidOSS to Rivermuse.

When you ask a vendor whether their product can do X, what are the chances for the answer to be no? Truth is, if there is any shape or form product can possible do X, regardless of how difficult and painful it may be to do so, the answer would be yes. Hence it is no surprise that people are highly skeptical of any statement made by the vendors.

As a versatile and open solution, RapidOSS is designed to be customizable and extensible to be able to solve wide range of problems.  read more »

Little things that count - audible alarms

As we work on customer projects and requests, we've developed number of valuable features for RapidOSS. We typically add these features as sample "solution templates". These solutions are typically distributed as part of the product under solutions directory. Solution templates serve as examples, demonstration of what's possible and starting points for customers.

In a series of posts, I'll mention some of these seemingly small features that seem to be important to some users.

I'll start with the audible alarms. Many customers want to be able to configure their PCs to warn them by playing a distinct sound (aka beep) to get their attention when there is a critical event, etc. Sounds simple enough, no?

Surprisingly this is quite cumbersome to implement with many IT management tools, requiring users to install software on the PCs, distribute scripts, audio files, etc. creating unnecessary administrative overhead. It is also hard to get it configured in such a way that is useful to the users.  read more »

Couple of weeks ago, we had announced that RapidOSS UI for mobile devices (Mobile IT management comes to town) and presented how RapidOSS mobile support enables users to work with management tools like Netcool and EMC/Smarts from their mobile devices.
Initial support was restricted to iPhone and Android devices. Today I'm happy to announce that RapidOSS web UI works as a read/write user interface on all mobile devices, including Blackberry devices.  read more »

Mobile IT management comes to town

Some observations:

  1. One of our key objectives has been to provide a unified, web based user interface for IT operations. We believe users should be able to navigate through management information seamlessly rather than being forced to jump between disparate tools and inconsistent user interfaces.
  2. Users are no longer content being forced to watch a specific console (or worse multiple consoles!)  on a computer screen and should be empowered to control how (IM clients, email, SMS, etc.) and when they receive the information, and act on the information as necessary.
  3. After many years of anticipation, mobile revolution is here. iPhone is a viable computing device for many business applications, and there are 10s of millions of them (iPhone and iPod Touches) out there.

Conclusion:
We need to ensure users can work with management information from their iPhones (and other mobile devices) to be able to do their jobs effectively. So how should we do this?  read more »

Don't call me I'll call you. Heartbeat Monitoring Demystified

“Polling” and “listening” are the most common monitoring techniques. Polling is where monitoring systems periodically call monitored systems to check whether the systems is operating as it should, and collect data (performance, etc.).  Listening is where monitoring system waits (listens)  for monitored systems to either directly or indirectly (through other systems, etc.) send information. In network monitoring, monitoring system polling SNMP agent of the devices, etc. is an example of polling technique, and processing of traps and syslog messages are examples of the listening technique.

Heartbeat monitoring is another technique that can be considered an enhanced form of listening. Some systems periodically send information,(events) aka heartbeats, to signal that the system is operating as it should. In this case, the absence of these heartbeat events and not events themselves indicate a problem, hence these events need to be processed differently than typical events.  read more »

Handling of the planned/unplanned maintenance of IT infrastructure is an essential event management activity, yet it seems to be an after thought in most tools.  The accuracy of the information presented to users is essential. Users need to know what it truly a problem that requires immediate action and what is not.  read more »

Fault management, performance management and event management trio of tools are typically at the heart of network management solutions. Although there are some integrated solutions that do offer components for all these management disciplines, organizations with large or mission critical networks often choose to use combination of tools that have the best functionality at each area . As a result, integration among these tools becomes crucial for the overall solution to be effective is supporting IT operations.  read more »

Event Management in IT Operations. The Journey of RapidOSS v3

IT infrastructure needs to be managed holistically. Its a given. How do we do that? It's been a painful
journey.

First there was the “frameworks” (Tivoli/CA). The idea of building all management tools on a common
framework so that they would all be integrated, have common user interface, etc. was very appealing. But the execution did not match the promise.

A single framework to manage the entire IT infrastructure turned up to be a pipe dream. Too costly, too difficult and too painful to buy, implement, and maintain. After spending hundreds (millions?) of thousands of dollars, many IT organizations abandoned the framework projects or significantly scaled them down. Most people who worked on framework implementation projects can still feel the bad taste left in their mouth.  read more »

Can you access your management tools from your favorite IM client? Now you can!

OK I admit that only a few people would use the words "IT management" and "cool" at the same sentence, but here I go! You can now work with your managements systems from your IM client. The latest release of RapidInformer now supports AOL IM, Google Talk, Jabber and IBM Sametime. You no longer have to be glued to the glass to stay informed or have a console running to interact with your management systems. Via the bidirectional IM interface, notification come to where you are and you can execute commands directly from your IM client or email. "ESM via IM" so to speak.

Let's review what this thing can do:

Notifications: Notifications can be send via email, SMS, instant messaging, or any system that has an API or command line interface. Not much new here other than Sametime support, moving right along.  read more »
